ArmInfo. Armenia's constitution is not an obstacle to signing a peace treaty with Azerbaijan, as stated by Gevorg Papoyan, Board member of the ruling "Civil Contract" party and Minister of Economy, during a briefing. He was commenting on Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev's remarks to France 24 regarding the possibility of establishing formal peace with Armenia contingent on constitutional amendments.
According to the Minister, the Constitutional Court has already made a clear assessment, confirming that the current constitution does not contradict the conclusion of a peace agreement with Azerbaijan.
"Our stance remains unchanged: we are ready to sign a peace treaty even tomorrow. The process has already begun and is making good progress. An important result has been reached - no casualties at the border." Major infrastructure projects are currently being implemented in the country with the support of American investment. This, in my opinion, is one of the most important factors for ensuring long-term peace and economic growth in the region," he noted.
It's worth noting that in an interview with France 24, Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev expressed hope that, as soon as the legal formalities are completed, referring to the amendments to the Armenian constitution and the preceding referendum, formal peace will be established between the countries.
