Reopening of Armenian-Turkish border of no benefit to Armenia -  politician

ArmInfo. One shouldn't be overly enthusiastic about opening the border with Turkey, as the Armenian authorities are doing, as it won't bring any good to the country.  This opinion was expressed by Edmon Marukyan, leader of the  Bright Armenia party and former Ambassador-at-Large, on his Telegram  channel.

To support his assertion, he compared the economic situations of  Georgia and Armenia. Marukyan recalled that Georgia has access to the  sea, is a transit hub, and as a result, receives significant income.  However, he noted that even without these criteria, Armenia is in a  better economic position than the Georgian side.

The party leader then pointed out the risks that could arise if the  borders were opened. According to him, this will create new  challenges for the country and weaken the resistance of those  responsible for ensuring the country's security, since Armenia has  yet to take any action prior to opening the border: it hasn't adopted  relevant laws, established restrictions, or taken any concrete steps  to ensure security.

Marukyan noted that all of the above actions should have been taken  before the current government held negotiations on opening the  border. "However, at this point, none of this has been done because  the Armenian authorities simply don't know or understand what needs  to be done," Marukyan concluded.

As a reminder, on October 21, Deputy Speaker of the Armenian  Parliament Ruben Rubinyan told reporters that an interdepartmental  technical meeting would soon be held between Armenia and Turkey to  discuss the resumption of the Gyumri-Kars railway service. Rubinyan  also added that negotiations on opening the border are ongoing.
