Yerevan commemorates the  liberation of Yerevan Fortress from   Persian rule

ArmInfo. A flower-laying ceremony took place in the Armenian capital at the  statue of the outstanding Russian commander Ivan Paskevich, marking  the 198th anniversary of the liberation of Yerevan during the  Russo-Persian War of 1826-1928.

According to the Moscow Cultural and Business Center "House of  Moscow" in Yerevan, the event was attended by representatives of the  Russian and Belarusian embassies, the Russian Center for Science and  Culture in Yerevan, the Moscow House in Yerevan, servicemen of the  102nd Military Base, schoolchildren, members of the "Young Friends of  Border Guards" movement, and others. Opening the ceremony, Vadim  Fefilov, Director of the Russian Center for Science and Culture in  Yerevan, emphasized the significance of the annual celebration of  this momentous event in Armenia. "One of the key figures in this  event was Ivan Fedorovich Paskevich-not only a strategically minded  military man but also an outstanding diplomat. He brought about the  signing of the Treaty of Turkmenchay, the fundamental point of which  was the return of Armenians to their ancestral lands," he said.

Hayk Melikyan, Director of the House of Moscow in Yerevan, noted that  the liberation of the Yerevan Fortress is one of the most important  chapters in Russian-Armenian history. "This glorious victory of the  Russian army became a great event for the Armenian people, who had  long sought freedom from the Persian yoke and peace in their  homeland," he noted. "It is a great honor for me to pay tribute to  the memory of all the participants of the Caucasian Corps, as well as  the Armenian population, who fought side by side against a common  enemy and contributed to the establishment of peace on this land,"  said Major General Alexander Bezborodov, commander of the 102nd  Military Base.

Grigory Aksyonov, Counselor of the Belarusian Embassy in Armenia,  also highlighted the importance of the event commemorating the  anniversary of the liberation of the Yerevan Fortress.
