ArmInfo. The West will not be able to ensure Armenia's security and give it any guarantees, as stated by the head of the Union of Armenians of Russia, Ara Abrahamyan, RIA Novosti reports. "I don't think Americans or Europeans can ensure Armenia's security.... If they can, let them say so and sign a document. Let them not say "surrender Armenia," but sign that the entire European Union provides guarantees, here is the schedule for the delivery of goods, (military) bases, and so on. Let them say so. And not "blah-blah," Abrahamyan told RIA Novosti.
According to him, so far, the West has only called for Yerevan to close the Russian military base. Additionally, the head of the Union of Armenians mentioned that the West will not buy goods from Armenia, that are now very popular in Russia. "Where to go, to the European Union? What can we sell there? You see, the standards are different there. Even if our apricots are really needed, the standards are different there, the certificates are different. We need a lot of time (to bring everything into compliance, - ed.). It's not that simple: Packaging, transportation, storage - there are a lot of issues. And here (in Russia) we just brought it, sold it at the market, people eat it - everyone is happy," Abrahamyan said.
He also noted that no one among pro-Russian Armenians is against cooperation with the European Union and the United States. "I have always said: who is against it (cooperation with the West)? Come on, I also want Americans so that we can work with them. I also want Europeans. But will they accept us? Will they solve our problems? Will they ensure our security? Will they help with our grain crops, which we currently buy from Russia at almost domestic prices? We buy gas. Will they give it to us? If so, then no problem," he noted. Abrahamyan believes that Armenian citizens do not need a visa-free regime with the European Union. "As almost all Armenians have American green cards," he joked.
