
ArmInfo. On February 24, the delegation of the European Parliament, headed by the Member of the European Parliament, Co-Chair of the EU-Armenia Parliamentary Partnership Committee Nils Usakovs, visited Yerevan State University.
As reported by the press service of the National Assembly, the guests were received by the Rector of the University Hovhannes Hovhannisyan, after which the European delegates met with students and teachers of the Faculty of International Relations of YSU.
The meeting was held in an active question and answer format. The future diplomats were interested in the expanding cooperation between Armenia and the European Union.
The European parliamentarians welcomed the aspiration of the Armenian authorities to join the European Union. The guests emphasized the importance of implementing sustainable democratic reforms in our country.
The meeting also discussed issues related to the security situation in the South Caucasus and challenges in the world.
Today, on February 25, the fourth meeting of the European Union-Armenia Parliamentary Partnership Committee will be held in the National Assembly of the Republic of Armenia. The current state and development prospects of relations between Armenia and the EU will be discussed during the meeting. On the same day, a press conference of the co-chairs of the Committee - Chairman of the NA Committee on European Integration Arman Egoyan and Member of the European Parliament Nils Usakovs will be held.
At its regular meeting on February 12, the Armenian Parliament adopted in the first reading the draft law on the beginning of the process of the country's accession to the European Union. 63 deputies voted for the adoption of the law, seven voted against. Only representatives of the ruling Civil Contract faction voted for the adoption of the document. The opposition faction "Armenia" did not participate in the vote, another opposition faction - "I have the honor" - voted against.
On January 9, the RA government approved this draft law. As Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan stated at the time, the decision on the country's accession to the EU should be made through a nationwide referendum. According to him, Armenia is comfortable in the EAEU, but the government sees that a significant part of the people wants the country to join the European Union.
