ArmInfo. Rector of Yerevan State Medical University named after M. Heratsi, Armen Muradyan, announced the cancellation of the educational process due to heavy snowfalls that have covered the entire territory of Armenia.
As the rector noted on his Facebook page, due to heavy precipitation, classes at the medical university, as well as exams, have been postponed to February 24. Muradyan added that missed classes will be compensated within the next week.
A similar situation has developed in other educational institutions. Classes have also been canceled in schools. In this regard, the Minister of Education, Science, Culture and Sports of Armenia Zhanna Andreasyan announced on February 20 the postponement of school classes with the possibility of their subsequent replenishment. Meanwhile, the mayor of the capital Tigran Avinyan stated that kindergartens should work, since working mothers have nowhere to put their children. Meanwhile, as ArmInfo has learned, many parents did not bring their children to kindergarten due to unfavorable weather conditions and difficulties with movement around the city.
Despite weather service warnings about the approaching cyclone, Yerevan authorities were not prepared for the bad weather. In the evening, the city was plunged into ten-point traffic jams, and the number of traffic accidents increased. Due to the lack of road treatment with reagents, public transport stopped, and city residents were forced to get to their homes on foot, covering significant distances in snowstorm conditions.
We should add that even ambulances, stuck on the roads, faced difficulties in moving. Bus drivers and ordinary citizens came to the aid of the ambulances, pushing and starting the cars. Meanwhile, Yerevan Mayor Tigran Avinyan, who remembered his obligations only closer to 23:00, went live from his page and reported with a smile that the city was being cleared of snowdrifts. He also noted that the citizens' discontent was inappropriate, since a month's worth of precipitation allegedly fell in just 10 hours. At the same time, he called on residents to stay home if possible.
In the morning, despite assurances from city authorities that snow removal work would be carried out, key city highways remained uncleaned. On the rare major streets, the roads were sprinkled with reagents, which made driving even more difficult for drivers, especially for sedan-type cars. Secondary roads remained virtually impassable.
