Nalbandian: Armenia ready to expand cooperation with Lebanon in defense and security sphere

This was stated by the Armenian FM Edward Nalbandian on March 15 in Rome at the ministerial conference on assistance to Lebanese security forces.

"Any processes in the Middle East can find response in this country, for the same reason, the situation in Lebanon can both arouse regional wounds and in the present turbulent times act as an islet of peace and serve as an example for other countries." All this increases the role of Lebanon from the point of view of stability and security, and confirms the imperative of international engagement to help this country effectively respond to challenges .We expect that from this point of view, this conference will be able to make its special contribution, after which they are taking appropriate practical steps, "Nalbandian said.

At the same time, the Armenian minister stressed that Lebanon is important for Armenia not only from the point of view of the regional importance of this country. He recalled that for centuries Armenians were part of the Middle East mosaic, and today in Lebanon is the largest Armenian community in the region, actively involved in the socio-political life of the country. "Armenians shared all the difficulties faced by the Lebanese people and are ready to contribute to the future of the country in the future." To achieve this goal, Armenia stands next to the Lebanese people. "Armenia repeatedly expressed its support to the people of Lebanon," the Armenian FM stressed.

At the same time, Nalbandian recalled that since November 2014, the Armenian peacekeeping brigade, consisting of 32 peacekeepers, as part of the Italian contingent is serving in the UN peacekeeping force in Lebanon (UNIFIL). According to him, Armenia reacted with high responsibility to this task, trying to bring its own benefit to the effective activities of UNIFIL. According to him, UNIFIL is not the only peacekeeping mission, to which Armenia joined. "History teaches us that security requires joint efforts, Armenia is ready to expand cooperation with Lebanon in the field of defense and security, on the basis of already existing concrete proposals, as well as on new ideas." Lebanon's role in the region is not limited to strategic importance. and the historical and cultural heritage of this country is of special value.Human values need special protection, "Nalbandian summed up.
